Prologue

1 In the land of Uz^(A) there lived a man whose name was Job.^(B) This man was blameless^(C) and upright;^(D) he feared God^(E) and shunned evil.^(F)

¹² This bread of ours was warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But now see how dry and moldy it is.

²³ His son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh,^(A) but his son by the free woman was born as the result of a divine promise.^(B)

The Certainty of God’s Promise

¹³ When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself,^(A)

⁷ The side rooms all around the temple were wider at each successive level. The structure surrounding the temple was built in ascending stages, so that the rooms widened as one went upward. A stairway^(A) went up from the lowest floor to the top floor through the middle floor.
